Hello everyone, I’m a total newbie to open source and Linux. I’ve heard wonderful things about the Linux OS. I hope to learn and be able to take back control of my digital life instead of having big tech dictate what I can and cannot do. Oh, I’m from Singapore.
Welcome! Good Luck on your Linux journey. We’re more than happy to help if you have any questions.
Hi, everyone. I go by EricTheAwful online (throwback to an old Ray Stephens song). I’ve experimented with Linux off and on since about 1998. Each time, I usually hit a snag that sent me back to the Tech Tyranny. I finally wrote Linux off for good, or so I thought. But considering we only have two choices (Windows/Mac on computers, Android/iOS on phones and tablets), it’s time to take another look at it.
I have a Raspberry Pi 3 a friend gave me a few years ago. I’m going to break it back out and start working with it.
Welcome back! Don’t hesitate to show off your Ras Pi skills in the Telegram chat
Hello,
I decided to join to help users who may need it. I’ve been using Linux for a good portion of time since about 2008, when even then at a fairly young age I tried to get away from anything Microsoft. Up until recently, I had Windows installed for the past 3 years. Discovering this group encouraged me to go for it again and install Arch. While I’m still learning, I was quite helpful on the Ubuntu forums and I hope I can be of assistance to people here.
Thank you! Can you please send us your contact info to support@jeff.pro? We would like to send you an invite to our private Intranet for forum admins
Mlfjdf93,
You know we all have to start somewhere and you are here now, which is far beyond many, many others. Keep reading, keep searching. Try to get an idea of what freedom from big tech would look like for you.
Hello! My name is Mayra, and I have been learning Linux for about 2 months now. It’s quite overwhelming as I’m not only learning this, but unlearning a lot of things at the same time. However, in the last week alone, I have crashed my system twice so this has allowed me to get really good at reinstalling all sorts of things using basic command codes, such as installing my VPN, and creating files and directories. I would like to learn how to create my own server sometime and I currently need to make my switch from dropbox to something more secure. baby steps! Looking forward to learning more with all of you!
Thank you for the warm welcome. I’ll definitely be asking a lot of questions as I transition out from windows 10 to Linux.
Wow, that’s amazing. I have a surface pro 3 and I’m looking to install Linux and remove windows.
WOW! The Pi is interesting t me. I’ve been looking for a good reason to get one. How did you find you could use it as a ham radio? And a server?
Hi, my name is Dan and I am happy to be here. I have been in the computer industry for 42 years and have been using Ubuntu for 10 years now. I have recently developed a complete Ubuntu package (free) which includes all of the apps and security and setup any regular user may want and once downloaded it can be installed on a computer in about 15 minutes. It is all foss and optimized for security from big tech. I just want to help new users get started fast and easy.
Hi to everyone, iam Anke and I want to change from Microsoft to Linux, because I want my privacy back. I don’t know Linux and I have to learn from the beginning.Iam from Germany
Hey Yall, my name is Michael. I’ve been a tech nerd most of my life, culminating in teaching myself how to create software for web, Windows, iOS and Android. I now work as the chief technologist for my in-laws’ company. I do not have any previous experience with Linux, however. I have to admit, I got a bit depressed around election time, wondering how I could unite with other patriots and make a difference. Jeff’s channel has been a breath of fresh air and felt very empowering. I have dual-booted my laptop with Ubuntu, dropped my iPhone and degoogled a Pixel 5a, and I’m having a really good time. I’m excited to share my experience, and learn from you all!
Hi Anke, I’m Kat and welcome! This is a great site and everyone is very helpful. I went from a lifelong windows user to a Linux user in no time. You will love having so many options, and will find your favorites in no time! Good luck and welcome!
Howdy, all! I’ve been following Jeff’s Telegram channel for a couple of months or so, and up til now, I’ve just been lurking here in the Forum. Just completed @discobot 's Forum tutorial! Pretty funny, but very educational!
My Linux background comes from supervising a team of about a dozen really geeky data-processing individuals, almost all of whom used Linux daily to accomplish their work. A couple of my guys were responsible for designing, purchasing, installing and administering a high performance computing cluster, and I got to sit in on a lot of technical discussions!! I always wanted to be one of the hands-on techies, rather than the supervisor, and finally now, three years into retirement, I get my dream.
I had already gotten the privacy bug when I heard about this channel - from CodeMonkeyZ, like several others of you! In the past several months, I set up a router-level VPN (Braxman router), converted a couple of older laptops to Ubuntu (even getting my husband transitioned!), and degoogled a couple of Moto G7 Plus phones (I thought the second one would be easier, but it was not without its issues - actually thought I had bricked it at one point ; finished it just today!!
).
Next for me is catching up on LMS training, and eventually getting into setting up my own VPN, personal cloud, etc…
Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help
.
Hi everybody, my name is Billy and I found the group via the Telegram chat room. I bit the bullet and bought a Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 20.04 already installed. I attempted to install Linux on my own earlier and struggled. Figured this would be an easier way to start my transition away from Apple and MS. So far so good, but I am still having issues with adding Nordvpn, already have a subscription for my other devices, and would like to figure out how to add Newpipe as an alternative to Youtube. I’d love nothing more than to be able to avoid logging in to any sites that track me.
That about sums up my story so far…need to join the classes Jeff has and hopefully that will allow me to do all I want to do. Reading others success stories definitely inspires me.
Happy Holidays to all,
Billy
So great to have you here! I joined the first LMS group back in September and its been a great change in my life. So grateful someone pointed me in this direction! Welcome!!
Thanks elleneia, I am super excited to be here and all that I am about to learn. Hope you have a Merry Christmas!!
