Say hello and introduce yourself!

Hi Everyone,

I just learned about this from Telegram yesterday, and am excited to get started. I am a complete beginner, and don’t know much about computers except that I have been using macs for several years. I have an Eee PC which I hope to convert to Linux first before trying it on my macbook pro. I would love to convert my phone eventually too. I hope it’s not too complicated to get Linux onto my computers. I’ve never done anything like this before.

Good luck @bokons
I’m a mac user too. Struggling…but I’m probably missing something obvious. But MAN! Apple just changed cloud controls etc, whisking all my folders and files off the desktop…and probably changing other things besides. I can’t get out of their web quick enough! Still optimistic I can retrain this brain with a little help from this forum.

Good morning :coffee: anyone?

I’m new to this Linux and am excited to conquer our computers and convert them all over. Path is starting off bumpy,

Thank you so very much for all the grace and advice, this is not my area of expertise.

Hi
I have a Inspiron I’m trying to install Ubuntu on, got to the booting USB and now it’s got a message saying ‘ The disk contains an unclean file system. The file system wasn’t safely closed on windows.’ Not sure whether to just leave it or if I should shut down again. Tempted to just wipe everything off computer. Any tips? Just joined here so might need to read a bit more

hello all,

i am living in all three worlds. windows, mac and linux. i am currently gathering experience with tails, which is a non-permanent distro, but offers the possibility to save settings and data on the livestick. hence i am living in europe, i could help you with all that myths about data-freedom.

I joined Jeff’s Telegram account the same day that Ron Watkins posted the link. And also taking the beginner’s classes. But, I’m not entirely new. I started learning Ubuntu around 2004. And used in in a small church to do visual communications for two years. Was very impressed and it was then the best OS. Very impressed with the idea of owning your data, open source philosophy and the amazing array of applications. I am just now returning to Linux because of Jeff. Hope to help with development in some way. But most experience is as a user and developing team workflows. The last time I did coding was around 1987 at A&M in C. I made too many typos and there was no spell/code check at the time! I understand it’s a bit more friendly now.

I am very impressed with the features of this forum, and the content is great! I knew about it, but was enjoying the Chat channel on Telegram. So glad to find a Linux/Tech group which is conservative and even christian friendly.

Hey @Kory!
How about you start a new topic for your issue, so that we can handle it properly?

Thanks, I figured it out. Should I delete my comment?

No worries! Let it be for other users to come across.

I am new to this and found out that a Raspberry Pi can act as a server? or some other network function, and I could use if for HAM radio. So, I got one to toy around with for those reasons. Turns out it has some basic uses, too - like I can log onto the internet. I am beginning to research how to use it as my cloud or server.

HI All! I’ve been following on TG for many months. I don’t want to change my current laptop, but am wondering what brand/model would be simplest to learn on. Any input is appreciated!

Hello folks. I’m somewhat computer illiterate. I mainly came here to learn more about Linux. I currently have Linux mint cinnamon running beside windows 10 on one hp laptop. I have another pc that I want to install Linux on but I’m having issues with it. I’ll revisit that later as I’m currently away from home. I want to get away from big tech and eventually remove windows completely. At first I plan to sit back, watch, read and maybe jump in when I see something that catches my attention. Please bare with me.

Hi Debbie. Linux works on “everything”! Ha, a bit of an exaggeration.
I would like any computer you want to use, will probably work.
One why to try would be to do a test drive using a usb drive. You can run Linux from the usb without installing.

Maybe mention the options you have regarding brand/model of the computer.
And you can search this forum or Jeff’s Telegram channel for doing the usb option.

Keep asking questions, people will be glad to help.

Hi Mikeybob, it sounds like you are on the right track and have some practical experience. Looking forward to seeing you figure out the next install. Ask. People here and on Jeff’s Telegram channel are very helpful.

Hello out there in Linux Land! I’m very computer illiterate, but started this journey, several months ago. Thus far, I have converted one HP Pavilion 21 and one 2011 MacBook Pro to ubuntu 20.04. Some success, but many failures along the way. That’s part of the learning curve. Thanks to the gang here, for showing me the way. Freedom feels great! Now for more Freedom. Moving on!

Hi all, here’s an update! I did kick windoz out of one laptop, and will very soon do this one! Almost done pulling the MS and Gggle tentacles out, one more back up, and then boom! Freedom! Then will be the pixel going to Graphene, setting up my Pi4B, and playing with the PinePhone. I am super stoked about getting big tech out of my life! My background has been mostly customer service, graphic arts, some web design, and printing, with some medical experience. I have picked up some computer skills along the way, but had Linux on the back burner. Now is the time for diving in! This is really what is next!!! Hats off to all of you who are making the change, taking the plunge, to get rid of big tech!! Way to go!!!

Yup, I B Lurkmore…been following since Jeff came down the escalator…CMZ sent me.
I started playing with linux about year ago when I brought home what I thought was my Dad’s old flatbed scanner that I was going to scan 4x5 negitives…But he had stuck an old Dell laptop in the box that the local repair shop said was totaled. After I bought a power cord I was able to get it up and running…windows 8.2…running like a wheelbarrow with a flat tire. I was able to save all his photos and other files, but after a month of troubles with updates and driver troubles the hard drive died. Started reading about Mint and managed to down load and format a boot-able usb drive that I used for a while and then I put a 250SSD in it and the rest was all down hill. After I was started I next found a 500g SSD for my wife’s old Acer vista and started her down the Linux Road. Upcoming projects would be local server… controling home security camera system… and may be a phone… my old cell phone is still down stairs in the file cabinet…motorola brick…

Picked up Jeff from CodeMonkeyZ. Thanks to Jeff’s Telegram, I am returning to Linux after several years. Since then Linux has improved while Windows has become unbearable.

Yes that is a Microsoft Surface Laptop with Ubuntu Hirsute Hippo! That was quite a battle and well worth it. Got the keyboard working even with a fully encrypted hard drive, AND the touch screen works fine. No dual boot for this baby. Setting up Thunderbird was easy, tho I may move to something more secure. Already have it backed up and yes, that IS an Apple Magic Mouse working on it, tho it drops from time to time. Not going to try on the camera; will buy a usb cam tomorrow.
Did I mention I also got degoogled? I ditched my android for a GrapheneOS Pixel 4. Jeff has had quite an impact on my tech life! FREEDOM!
