Sound driver issue?

I’m running Mint Cinnamon and suddenly I cannot get my headphones to work on my desktop. This is a serious issue because my husband and I share an office and listen to different things. I have sound through the speakers, but that disrupts what he’s listening to. I’ve tried swapping out the headset for my husband’s headset, and it acts just the same as mine. Suggestions?

Only thing iI can think of is plug in ypur headphones and open Sound settings. Should be something like this.

As a work around you can get a USB to Audio Jack adapter Amazon.com: DUKABEL USB to 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter, USB to Aux Cable with TRRS 4-Pole Mic-Supported USB to Headphone AUX Adapter Built-in Chip External Sound Card for PC PS4 PS5 and More [9.8 inch] : Electronics and see if that works.

My sound settings do look something like that. When I test sound, it comes through the speakers, not the headphones. I don’t understand why. Obviously the headphones are recognized, but I get no sound through them. I borrowed my husband’s headphones, that work perfectly well on his computer, and they act the same way. Suggestions to fix this are appreciated.

Interesting. I just tested a set of headphones with my system. I was listening to something through a set of external speakers and as soon as the headphones were plugged in audio switched to them. Perhaps the audio hardware (headphone jack) in your system isn’t working?

It’s a brand new case. It doesn’t seem to matter which USB port I use, I get the same result. Is there anything else I could try to troubleshoot this? The USB ports are all functional with other equipment. I’m also not getting the volume out of my speakers that I would have expected. Hence, I wonder whether it’s a driver problem.

You’re trying differentUSB ports, so the headset is designed for use with USB? This is a long shot, but are there any updates available for your system? Since the headphones show up in your Sound manager application, the system is recognizing them and “should” be sending audio to that output. When they are plugged in and selected, does audio to the speaker(s) stop?

Was this working in the past? Does your headset work on your husband’s system?

I think I just figured it out! I use Brave Browser by preference, but apparently Brave is not handling sound very well. I loaded a site in Firefox, and the headset worked, volume nice and loud. I’ll be thankful when Brave fixes this!
