dennis, you have been a great help to me tonight. you were able to get me to a screen that allowed me to login and view my files. then you were able to get me thinking about what changed which made me remember the bash change. and with that, i changed from the .bashrc.bak to .bashrc and what do you know…success!
i am now back in business because of your patience and assistance. thank you very much.

I would create a new user in case something like this happens in the future.
A bad profile only affects the one user. Other user can log in to make changes.

good idea. how do i check or create a root user account?
I have always done that at install time never from scratch. There should be plenty of info on that at most any search engine.
