There are two GtkHash apps available in the Mint/Cinnamon 22.0 Software Manager.
- Flatpak/Flathub, at 858 MB to download, 2.9 GB to run.
- System Package, at 504 kB.
Screenshots of both apps appear to be the same.
Question:
What in the world could make such a HUGE difference in size if the apps are both doing the same work???
A flatpak is so fat because it’s supposed to be linux version agnostic. All of the code required for it to run on most any distribution is included along with the app. When installed it’s in a private sandbox, think of it as a container holding all of the binaries & libraries & configuration data it needs. Dependencies on the operating system to provide those libraries etc is removed from the equation. I’ve got a few flatpaks installed, the latest being Slack. Software Manager showed flatpak only, so I used that vs converting the rpm to a debian package.
